Genelec and Oulu2026 – Collaborating to Create World-Class Cultural Experiences

Genelec and the European Capital of Culture, Oulu2026, have launched a collaboration to put high-quality sound at the core of the event's art and cultural experiences. As a result, Genelec loudpeaker systems and technical expertise power several works at Oulu2026.

Bringing life to the event's 'Sound of Oulu2026' initiative, Genelec audio solutions can be heard in works such as Rauhan kerroksia, Underground Clash, Logos, Kiasma North, and the Lumo Art & Tech programme.

“Through this partnership, these works will receive the world-class sound quality they deserve. Artists, production teams and audiences alike will benefit from this in 2026,” says Matleena Aarikallio, Partnership Manager at Oulu2026.

Two dedicated Genelec experiences will be set up at the Pekuri Shopping Centre for the duration of the cultural capital year. The PLAY exhibition from Fotografiska Tallinn is an independent experience – with its own entrance fee – and it features sound designed and integrated by Genelec to complement its architecture and visual design. This audio element enhances the interpretation of the works and completes a multisensory experience.

Adjacent to the exhibition is the Genelec Lounge, an open space free to the public. Visitors can explore sound in a relaxed environment and participate in various events throughout the year. At the heart of the lounge is a Dolby Atmos 7.2.4 listening room, where a Genelec immersive system enables a stunning 3D audio experience. Private listening demos can also be booked, allowing visitors to experience the space’s sound environment while accompanied by a helpful Genelec expert.

Genelec views its collaboration with Oulu2026 as part of a wider cultural and societal mission. Our relationship with art and culture is deep and intrinsic to our identity. This was highlighted by Genelec Brand Art Creator Juho Martikainen's speech at the opening of the cultural capital year,

“At Genelec, art and culture are not only sources of inspiration but also a fundamental part of our identity and existence. We have always believed that creativity and artistic expression are essential for human well-being and a sustainable society. Oulu2026’s theme, Cultural Climate Change, invites us to see culture as a living climate – a force that shapes our thinking and our ability to imagine new possibilities. We want to be part of enabling this change, supporting artists, building shared experiences, and helping sound transcend boundaries.”

At the core of this collaboration is the idea that art and culture are forces that help society reflect on itself, strengthen communities, and open new ways to connect and listen to one another. Genelec operates at the intersection of art and technology – as an enabler delivering tools that support the creative process and transform inspiration into an audible experience.

Genelec CEO Siamäk Naghian summarises the partnership’s significance:

“We are extremely excited and proud to collaborate with Oulu2026, the European Capital of Culture. Genelec’s mission is to help its clients realise their visions by providing the most truthful sound reproduction. This partnership gives us a unique opportunity to bring high-quality sound to the experiences of the cultural capital year. Oulu’s strong technology and cultural expertise provides an excellent foundation for innovative collaboration, where sound and art come together in a unique way. This partnership not only enhances the quality of artistic experiences but also underscores Genelec’s commitment to the development of culture and technology.”
